The spring equinox, a time when light and darkness are in balance, is a reminder that the forces of nature within us can be in perfect harmony. This is especially true for our masculine and feminine energies. Typically, one or the other dominates within us. In reality, however, when these qualities are in perfect balance within us, we become balanced human beings.
According to Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, yogi, mystic and NY Times best-selling author, having the masculine and feminine qualities balanced within us, regardless of the sex of our body, makes a balanced human being.
All physical manifestations can only happen between polarities — positive–negative, masculine–feminine, Shiva–Shakti, man–woman. The moment we create a divide between the polarities, judgments about perceived superiority and inferiority between the two arise. Out of these judgments, many layers of confusion, ugliness, and exploitation have occurred. Male and female are just manifestations of either the masculine or the feminine being present in an enhanced way. The fact that you are sitting here as a woman does not mean that your father does not exist within you, and the same applies to men and their mothers, of course. If you recognise this truth and nurture both the masculine and the feminine within you so that they are on an even keel, you will be a balanced human being. If you only nurture the masculine, the crassness of machismo will find expression. If you only nurture the feminine, an excessive sense of decorativeness and emotion will find expression.
During this natural time of balance, seek balance in your own life. Pay attention to how you are in your day-to-day interactions with people: family, friends, work colleagues or strangers. Life, itself, is the greatest teacher.
For everyone north of the equator, spring arrives on 20 March. From an astronomical point of view, this day marks the day when the sun crosses the earth’s equator moving north after spending the autumn and winter months south of the equator. This day also marks one of two times of the year (the other being the autumn equinox in September) in which day and night are more or less equal depending upon where you live. It is this “balance” between night and day that creates a special opportunity in which we can rise above self-created imbalances that keep us from living the life we want.
