  • The Vernal Equinox:
    An Opportunity for Balance

The Vernal EquinoxFor everyone north of the equator, spring arrives on 20 March. From an astronomical point of view, this day marks the day when the sun crosses the earth’s equator moving north after spending the autumn and winter months south of the equator. This day also marks one of two times of the year (the other being the autumn equinox in September) in which day and night are more or less equal depending upon where you live. It is this “balance” between night and day that creates a special opportunity in which we can rise above self-created imbalances that keep us from living the life we want.

In the realm of spirituality, balance is one of the most fundamental requisites for living a joyful and successful life. Without balance, our physical and emotional health suffers. When we “lose our center”, our physical well being is upset and we experience dis-ease. In our minds, we become unstable and emotionally insecure such that small events and normally easily managed life situations cause us irritation, worry or stress. On the other hand, when we have inner balance, we are able to meet every situation with equanimity and skill.

What does it mean to be in balance? At a core level, balance is simply a state of equanimity. Practically, this means our masculine and feminine natures are perfectly in balance. As a man or a woman, our tendency is to over-emphasize the quality that matches the sex of our body, creating a state of imbalance. In their primary expressions, masculine qualities include action, service and logic while the feminine qualities emphasize creation, reception and emotions. Both are necessary in order to live a fulfilling life. However, because we are sentient beings with free will and the capacity to make choices, we tend to over analyze our lives creating an imbalance. A man becomes too focused on taking action and ignores his capacity to receive or feel emotional depth. A woman can rely too much on her emotions and ignore her capacity for reason and taking right action. As a man or woman, it is natural to express ourselves accordingly but not at the expense of our inner peace.

The equinoxes are opportunities to bring back that balance. On this day, see yourself as not simply a man or a woman but as a conscious “piece of Life” full of unlimited possibility. See yourself as having both the power to create and the power to take action, to give and to receive, to sustain your life in the best possible way. Within you is the power to create and maintain existence, your existence. Within this power is the capacity to experience life in the most beautiful and invigorating way for in truth, you are not just a man or a woman. You are much more. Seize this day and discover your “other half”. ?

  • Holistic Ways Festival

Edinburgh Holistic Ways Festival - astrologyWhat a pleasure it was to participate at Edinburgh’s Holistic Ways Festival this past Sunday. Gail and Adrian made sure we were all settled and had everything we needed to make it a success. I was completely busy reading people’s charts from the opening at 1030 until an hour and a half after closing time. My only break came at 1230 when I gave an hour talk entitled “Freeing Yourself from the Past: How Astrology Can Help You Live the Life You Want.”

It was amazing to be able to meet so many great people who wanted to learn a little more about their lives. What I offered was a small window into their past and how it was holding them back. Of course, it would not be nice of me to leave them there so I also showed them what they could embrace in order to be free from their constrictions.

It was a fantastic opportunity to meet members of the Edinburgh holistic community. I look forward to more.

  • The usefulness of an astrological reading

    Astrology

The usefulness of astrology goes far beyond its acceptance in new age circles as a crystal ball. Predictions can be useful in certain situations, as in helping one take measures to prevent unpleasant circumstances. However, astrology’s true strength lies in its capacity for revealing the fundamental patterns of our pain body and the path by which we may free ourselves from its constrictions. Once we consciously engage the process, we have opened a channel to liberation, the state of being beyond all limitation and restriction.

Every human being enters this world with a burden from the past. This burden creates stagnation and contraction in certain areas of our life, usually the ones we most want to engage. Relief from the past comes in understanding the future for where it is we most want to go is exactly what will untie the knot of the karmic past.

This aspect of astrology begins with the nodes of the Moon. In Jyotish, the astrology of India, the south node is known as Ketu and represents the past. 180 degrees opposite Ketu is its counterpart, the north node, Rahu, and represents the future. This axis forms the most important consideration in an astrological chart for from it, one can discern not only the pain one carries from past lives but the path to undo its karmic knots. The Ketu/Rahu axis is the path to ultimate freedom.

Everything in a chart is subordinated to the Ketu/Rahu axis. Whatever one is experiencing can and should be traced back to Ketu and the past it represents. No clear understanding of what one is going through will be forthcoming unless Ketu is understood. We are spiritual beings evolving toward pure awareness and all present circumstances tied to the past must be resolved.

Interestingly, resolution does not come from meeting the past head on and gritting the teeth in an effort to “gut it up.” According to the astrological perspective, resolution comes from embracing the karmic future as represented by Rahu. This is the area of life the inherent energies within us are gravitating toward. By engaging this area consciously and willfully, we are helping the process along. Ultimately, this process frees us from the karmic past.

  • What Astrology Can Do For You

Other than the enlightened, every human being who walks upon this planet carries a burden from their distant past, a burden that prevents them from living a truly fulfilling life. This burden was created when an aspect of life was mismanaged leading to a traumatic event that caused great pain and suffering. So significant was this pain that a wall was created in an effort to protect oneself from what was mistakenly viewed as the cause. This burden is what is now experienced as a fundamental life constriction, the obstacle that separates you from living the life of your dreams.

Paradoxically, working through this burden will not bring results. Facing our burdens head on does not work because they are too deeply rooted in our psyche to overcome through sheer willpower. Being aware of how they influence our life is helpful but to really work through it, we need another plan.

In astrology, we are able to not only look in detail at the burden we carry but also at the path we must follow in order to let it go. Knowing this line, from past to present future, is why astrology came into existence thousands of years ago. Astrology tells us that the way out of the constricting grasp of our burdens is through the opposite area of life, astrologically speaking.

The format of this method is simple; first we begin by discovering what it is, deep down, that is holding you back from living a life unencumbered with restrictions. This is not saying we are to live a life without obstacles and challenges. Rather, it says we can be in such a state that obstacles and challenges do not affect our inner experience. In simple terms, this is what is referred to as “enlightenment.”

After understanding how the past affects you, we look at how you can break free from its clutches by embracing and energizing the areas that encompass all the domains where your energy naturally wants to go. This is found in the sign opposite the sign of your distant past. This sign is the key you seek and can lead to your complete freedom.

  • O What Joy!

On top of Calton Hill, Edinburgh at sunrise…

O what joy hath found a man,
Who wakes to find this morn at hand,
The new day is born; the child’s arrived,
    Another chance to come alive!

    Happy New Year, Everyone!
